Citronella is a tropical herbaceous plant from southern India belonging to the Poaceae family. Also known as Indian verbena or lemon grass, its stems and leaves have remarkable aromatic qualities. Widely used in cooking, the freshly sliced stems are a traditional ingredient in South East Asia to give a lemony taste to dishes. In Morocco, it is used to flavour green tea with mint.
As it is traditionally known, planting Citronella around your house will help to limit the presence of mosquitoes. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the aerial parts (stems and leaves), so it has the same properties as the plant.
