The therapeutic and culinary virtues of Ginger have been known and used for a long time. Originally from China, where it has been found for over 2000 years, it was imported into ancient Egypt where it was used for mummification. It was used in cooking and for its digestive properties by the Greeks and Romans. As early as the Middle Ages, when it was also widely used, its aphrodisiac virtues are mentioned.
Quality fresh ginger essential oil comes from plantations grown organically without the use of fertilisers or pesticides. The rhizomes are harvested at 9 or 10 months when the green parts dry out after flowering. The rhizomes, after a 12-hour maceration in water, are then steam distilled. Its particularly fresh, lemony (with a hint of lime) and spicy smell is reminiscent of the delicious scent of freshly cut roots.
