Orange Essential Oil
Calming, Orange essential oil provides real well-being and soothes tension. Rebalancing, Orange essential oil conveys good humour and optimism. When diffused, Orange essential oil helps to fight against sleep disorders. With its sweet and fruity scent, it blends subtly with many oils, particularly woody and spicy ones.
The fruit of the Citrus sinensis is called Sweet Orange to differentiate it from the Bitter Orange, fruit of the Citrus Aurantium (Bitter Orange). Originally from China, the Citrus sinensis orange tree was brought to Europe by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century.
The essence of the orange is found in the small reservoirs of the orange peel and is extracted by simple expression (cold pressing). We therefore speak of “essences” for citrus fruits, to distinguish them from “essential oils” extracted by steam distillation. For the sake of simplicity we will often use the term “essential oil” for essences.
The purifying and fragrant properties of this essence have been used for a long time, since oranges studded with cloves (“amber apples”) were traditionally used to keep moths out of wardrobes and to perfume and decorate homes before Christmas. This oil is also ancestrally reputed for its relaxing and optimising action with its soft and sweet scent. It is one of the most widely used essential oils in aromatherapy.
