Pelargonium – or flowering cranesbill – is a member of the Geraniaceae family and is native to southern Africa. The Greek origin of the plant’s botanical name is “geranos”, which means “crane” because the fruit of the plant is compared to the beak of this bird. The geranium was imported into Europe at the end of the 16th century. Its pretty, fragrant flowers, pink, white or red, were a great success and it quickly became very fashionable at the court and in the gardens of French castles. Gardeners have tried many hybrids over the centuries and there are now more than 600 species of geranium! They are cultivated all over the world, particularly in China, in the Maghreb countries, including Egypt. The Egyptian Geranium is a rose Geranium and has the same properties as its Bourbon counterpart, however the “Bourbon” Geranium is known for its finer, flowery and sweet olfactory quality.
