Tangerine Essential Oil
Calming, Tangerine Essential Oil is appreciated for soothing stress, insomnia and emotional tension. In cosmetics, it is used in the care of oily skin and scalp, or as a green and fruity note in perfumery.
The clementine tree has only been known since the beginning of the 20th century and its origin remains mysterious: according to some authors, the Reverend Father Clement was responsible for its discovery in a mandarin seedling at the Misserghim orphanage in Algeria. Others say that the same Reverend Father deliberately crossed the common mandarin tree (Citrus deliciosa Tenore) with a variety of sour orange tree (Citrus aurantium L.) to create this fruit. However, recent studies have shown that it was actually a hybrid between the mandarin and the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). In any case, the fruit was named “clementine” in honour of the man of the cloth. The clementine is a member of the large citrus family and is cultivated for its very sweet taste and its absence of seeds. When ripe, the fruit is green in colour and turns orange when the temperature drops in winter. The clementine is harvested from December to February.
To obtain Tangerine essential oil, not the fruit but the leaves, small branches and small green fruits are harvested in spring and distilled in the presence of steam. The result is an essential oil with a green, slightly woody and citrusy smell, which has been appreciated for centuries for its valuable role in calming nervous and emotional tension and fighting stress. Due to its composition, rich in antispasmodic active ingredients, it is traditionally reputed to contribute to the relaxation of everyday muscular contractures.
