Cousin of the fragrant Gaultheria from Nepal, the reclining Gaultheria is native to China. Used by the Amerindians for centuries for its many virtues, Gaultheria procumbens is a heather less than 15 cm high in the Ericaceae family. Its white to pale pink summer flowers at the base of the leaves are usually solitary and bell-shaped. From October to March they produce bright red berries.
The leaves, when dried and infused or chewed, were traditionally used to reduce fever and soothe joint pain. Like sweet gaultheria, its leaves are composed mainly of methyl salicylate, a compound with a structure similar to that of aspirin, and which has similar anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.
The essential oil of Wintergreen has similar properties to the essential oil of Sweetgreen. Due to its composition rich in methyl salicylate with analgesic effects, it is traditionally used as an ingredient in sports massage oils to help relieve aches, cramps and pain after exercise. Because of its calming activity, it is also commonly recommended by aromatherapists to soothe rheumatism, pain and discomfort in tendons and joints.
